Due to global warming, an average of 267 billion tons of ice have melted worldwide each year over the past 10 years. The tropical glaciers of Peru's Cordillera Blanca have also lost 40% of their total area in the last 70 years. This means that one of the most important freshwater reservoirs on the South American continent is slowly drying up.
