METAL

Copper, occurring in its native form, was possibly the first metal discovered, as its distinctive appearance, weight, and malleability set it apart from other stones or pebbles. Gold, silver, iron, and lead were also discovered in prehistory. Forms of brass, an alloy of copper and zinc produced by simultaneously smelting the ores of these metals, date from this period. The malleability of solid metals led to the first attempts to manufacture metal jewelry, tools, and weapons.
